about
About Gamma Rave:
Live electronica is Gamma Rave’s basic mission statement, the latest project from Will Harwood (Gadje Scum), Sanne Werkers (Brazzmatazz, Den Hoed Music), Jonas Nyaarr (Idealus Maximus, GoToEleven) and Geert de Waegeneer (Thou, BOMA Studio).
The group aims to bring dance-floor-filling electronic dance music to the live circuit, taking a fresh approach to the genre by combining the synthetic tones of electronica with the more raw style of punk.
If anything, the band is as much “live” as they are “electronic”, with a dynamic sound that is constantly shifting in style and mood. Songs often fade in on a sinister trip-hop groove, before flowing into a hip-hop flavoured build, and then finally breaking out into a screaming Drum & Bass climax. Add in a healthy dose of dub, dubstep, rock and techno, and you’ve got all the makings of a dancefloor shaking spectacle.
About Flatline:
Gamma Rave's debut single, Flatline, is built around the concept of a patient flatlining. Starting with the simple beep of a life-support monitor and a rhythmic heartbeat, the song gradually adds more and more layers to the mix, building in a frenzy before cutting away to the inevitable flatline, and then breaking out into a tempestuous Drum & Bass chorus. From that point on the song doesn't let up, with chugging punk riffs, driving drums, screaming synths, rapid-fire vocals, and twisty rhythm and tempo changes.
Based off of a text written by MC Willybobz when he was 17, the lyrical themes of the song serve as the perfect complement to the music, asking the question of whether the word “freedom” has lost some of its relevance and meaning in today's' society where our freedom is assumed, yet is steadily being eroded away. Perhaps, as the flatline of the song suggests, "freedom" is a word that's dead.
lyrics
Tell me what is freedom? Now is it just a word
Without meaning preserved? Is it really so absurd
To live in a lie where they capitalise on
Democracy? Abusing the faith of the majority,
Call the police I wish to report a robbery,
Freedom has been stolen by those in authority,
Taking us to war in the name of liberty,
All they bring is misery, grief and control,
Delivering the right to do as you’re told,
And the chance to trade your life for a trickle of gold
Freedom is a word that is getting old
Freedom is a concept bought and sold
Freedom is a word that’s been undermined
Freedom is a word that’s been redefined
Freedom is a lie that we’ve been spoon-fed
Freedom is a word that’s dead
Tell me is there a free man standing in this room?
Or is everybody here dancing to the same old tune?
Have we all been deceived? Caught up in the same routine
Every day bound in chains that are felt but never seen
Will we know a world past the invisible cage?
Beyond the laws and all the lies and the weekly wage
There’s a world out there unknown to these virgin eyes,
Where freedom is the truth not oppression in disguise
Rewritten and revised, meaning compromised
Written on lies that you can’t justify
We defy we arise side by side we all cry
Now open up your eyes and read between the lines
Freedom is a word that’s been undermined
Freedom is a word that’s been redefined
Freedom is a lie that we’ve been spoon-fed
Freedom is a word that’s dead
Freedom is a word that’s been undermined
Freedom is a word that’s been redefined
Freedom is a lie that we’ve been spoon-fed
Freedom is a word that’s dead
