about

About Gamma Rave:
Live electronica is Gamma Rave’s basic mission statement, the latest project from Will Harwood (Gadje Scum), Sanne Werkers (Brazzmatazz, Den Hoed Music), Jonas Nyaarr (Idealus Maximus, GoToEleven) and Geert de Waegeneer (Thou, BOMA Studio). The group aims to bring dance-floor-filling electronic dance music to the live circuit, taking a fresh approach to the genre by combining the synthetic tones of electronica with the more raw style of punk.

If anything, the band is as much “live” as they are “electronic”, with a dynamic sound that is constantly shifting in style and mood. Songs often fade in on a sinister trip-hop groove, before flowing into a hip-hop flavoured build, and then finally breaking out into a screaming Drum & Bass climax. A healthy dose of dub, dubstep, rock, and techno, also helps to keep the songs fresh and surprising.

Having shared stages with the likes of Asian Dub Foundation and Dub Pistols, as well as having played a closing set at the Gentse Feesten and performing at the prestigious Boomtown Fair in the UK, Gamma Rave has all the makings of a dance-floor shaking spectacle.

About Crossroads:
On writing “Crossroads”, MC Willybobz states:
“In 2007 me and my brother went on a roadtrip across the states. We were driving through the streets of San Francisco one night when we arrived at a crossroads where all the streetlights had blown out. On the other side of the junction we could see the silhouette of what we assumed to be a cyclist. We waited for them to go but they didn’t move. So we pulled away. As our headlights fell on the silhouette we realised it was actually an old woman sat in a wheelchair in the middle of the road, looking right at us. In hindsight we should have stopped to see if she was okay, or at the very least have gotten her out of the road. But I’m ashamed to say that we simply drove on. We seemed to be in a fairly rough area of the city, and the whole scene had unnerved us. It was like something out of a horror movie. The whole experience got me thinking. Who was this woman? What was she doing there and how had she ended up there? This was the birth of “Crossroads”, a song about those who slip through the cracks in our society and are left behind, and about how we’re all complicit in this. Myself included.”

Sound-wise, Crossroads is a pounding Drum & Bass banger with Gamma Rave’s signature screaming synths and growling guitar riffs. The song makes a few ballsy, unconventional manoeuvres, but we’ll let you discover that for yourselves. No need to spoil the surprise.

lyrics

Beneath a lamplight shattered, just another hazard
All fractured and tattered, mad as a hatter, does she even matter?
Should we even care? No one stops to  stare
Everyone’s scared of the silhouette with silver hair, in a rusty  chair

At the crossroads, God knows there’s a lost ghost
Crawling off this old bowl, this old soul has lost  control
And she’s chosen her moment to go
But we set the locomotive in motion and roll

Right on by, windows up high, nose up to the  sky
Never look her in the eye, tell me why
She’s been left for dead in this 2D set
There’s a rupture in our culture and we show no regret

She has made her bed and she has paid her debts
So place your bets is this her final step?
Ethics are paper thin, nobody’s listening
A life is flickering but still nobody’s wrestling

With right and wrong, wrong and right,
What happened to the price of life? We strive for heights but falling short
We roll right past, she’s made of glass,
My mirror image stares right back what of her past? It fades to black

The irony and the hypocrisy
Is that the meaning of this song is fucking lost on me
So stop accosting me, it’s not costing me
I am happy and free I don’t need to feel guilty

A million ways to live or die and this is how
A single chance to save a life but never now
I write these rhymes to shun the shame
So I can point the blame somebody else’s way

And all the poems and all the songs they hide her face away
Lost in words of meaning that are meaningless today

Slipped through the cracks, we all turn our backs
My disposable conscience isn’t made to last
Put out to pasture left hanging in the rafters
There’s no next chapter no happily ever after
Just disaster on the hifi, attired in her tie-dye
Resigned to her time to die, society turns a blind eye
Recognise the crime it’s high time
Between apathy and evil is a fine line

Retired and expired no desire for an encore
The curtain is drawn she won’t go on no more
In a shroud disempowered and devoured she has tapped out
Screwed up and scratched out, chewed up and spat out
Dissected ingested digested neglected
Rejected detested ejected dejected
Now check this, we wrecked this, gone and made a mess of this
She’s helpless so restless, so sorry I’m a pessimist

Face the disgrace this place is a facade
Everyday just the same a race into the grave
She’s chased into a cold embrace this ain’t no safe space
Just a charade all smoke and mirrors and haze ablaze
A forgotten cog within the machine
She’s invisible cos she’s never seen like a bad dream
Might as well be up in space it’s fucking obscene
Cos down here on earth no one can hear her scream
